From the wayback blog of the awesome Rick Prelinger, a 1966 telephone/address directory of the upper Haight.
It’s interesting to note that the businesses still proudly in operation (Roberts Hardware, Neda’s Flowers, Persian Aub Zam Zam, the Gold Cane (since moved from its original location, now Club Deluxe), New Lite Supermarket, among others) are neighborhood-serving uses rather than destination retail. This is a great example of why we’re doing this walk. There are two distinct but symbiotic neighborhoods in the upper Haight; residents and visitors coexist almost to the exclusion of each other, and yet influence each others’ experience in significant ways. This has historically been true of the neighborhood, which throughout a long and colorful history has maintained a core of livability and community.
